Yes, yes, we all heard at least once this magical phrase: “choose a job you love and you will never have to work”. It’s often attributed to Confucius (thanks to an American journalist in 1980s who started the legend) – but I have a doubt, after all, Confucius lived in the era where your choice of job was defined not by your desires but by which family you were born into.
Thankfully we do not live in Confucious’ time so I’m free to pursue the job I love to do — translation. It combines so many activities and qualities I cherish: getting into the detail, comparative analysis, relentless research that sometimes resembles a detective investigation, linguistic gymnastics and let’s not forget, constant immersion in marvellous books.
